Explaining How Often Should I Change My Oil

Specific intervals vary by a vehicle’s manufacturer and , as well as oil type. Consult your owner’s manual or vehicle schedule to see how often to change the oil in your vehicle and what type of oil to use. You may be surprised.

Note:

In many owner’s manuals the following are considered “severe” driving conditions:
Frequent idling for long periods of time, such as stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic. Many vehicles are subjected to this condition twice a day for commuting purposes.
Sustained highway driving in hot weather.
Towing a boat or trailer, carrying heavy objects on a rooftop rack.
Driving in dusty conditions, such as dirt or gravel roads.
Prolonged operation at sub-zero temperatures.
Driving on steep hills or mountains on a regular basis.
With the exception of #5, most Arizonans’ driving falls under these conditions.

As a result of meeting any one of the above conditions, those same owner’s manuals recommended switching to a 3,000 mile .

vs.

comes in 3 distinct types. There’s Conventional, which is oil that is derived directly from crude oil. On the other hand, Synthetic oil is mostly man-made using complex processes in a laboratory setting. So, Synthetic Blend, which as the name suggests, is a blend of synthetic and conventional oils.

Synthetic oil handles the “severe” driving conditions mentioned above better than conventional oil, which is where the difference in mileage suggestions comes into play:

Conventional: Change every 3,000 miles.

Synthetic Blend: Change every 4,000 miles.

Synthetic: Change every 5,000 miles.

An oil change is a great time to take a look over the rest of the car and make note of any problems needing to be addressed in the near future, so there aren’t any surprises (literally) down the road.
